Fried Chicken Rundown: From Regular to Umbrian

Fried chicken is king at Okra. Sure, we’ve got some pretty tasty, and colorful, salads on the menu. Our meatloaf wins the hearts of former meatloaf haters. And our catfish is awfully tasty. But none of the dishes on our menu receive more praise than our fried chicken. Here’s how we do it at Okra.

Your traditional-style fried chicken. But don’t be fooled by its unassuming name. While its name is humble, you may be surprised to find how full-flavored and savory this dish truly is.

Tennessee Hot
Not for the meek, this version of fried chicken is equal parts spicy and delicious. Covered in cayenne hot sauce, the thigh and leg combo is served up with a sweet, soft cornbread, which makes for a winning combination in our book.

This southern classic is drenched, no smothered, in a peppery gravy, which compliments the crisp exterior of our fried chicken quite nicely.

Chow Chow and Honey
What is “chow chow” exactly? It’s not an uncommon question at Okra. Let us explain it for you. Simply, chow chow is a North American pickled relish that is constructed from a  variety of vegetables, mainly green tomatoes, but it’s not uncommon to find it made with cabbage, cauliflower, red tomatoes, onions, asparagus, carrots or beans. The pickled relish is served atop of our fried chicken and drizzled with honey, and it makes for good eatin’.

Southern cooking meets Italian at Okra, so it’s obvious that we’d offer up fried chicken with an Italian twist. This tasty combination is prepared with Italian herbs and spices that give the traditional southern dish a bit of Italian flare.
